The goal of the ABC's is to help get the American Legion Auxiliary, Department of Washington, back to our basics by providing information to help in the revitalization of Units and Districts. Ensuring current and proper information on parliamentary procedures, programs, protocols, as well as traditions help to strengthen our organization. The ABC Class is also an excellent way to help acquaint new members to our purpose; and, gives a new Unit a strong foundation.

Communication is the key to success. With the ABC training we provide lots of material and ways to use communication in your Unit & District, plus adding a little fun into your meeting and getting the information out to your members.

We cover the history of the American Legion Auxiliary - its founding Purpose, Mission and current Vision Statement. We also cover proper attire from clothing to pins, sashes, hats; protocol at meetings, dinner meetings, basic seating; procedures of conducting meetings, parliamentary procedures, programs, and the responsibilities of officers and chairman.

A few examples of class content are:

1: History - the establishment of American Legion Auxiliary was provided for at the first National Convention of The American Legion in 1919. Do you know what military service we share our birthday with?

2: Structure of the Organization - Unit, Department and National

3: Chain of Command - If there's problem in your Unit that can't be solved within the Unit; the Unit President needs to contact the District President. If the problem involves the Unit President then it would fall to the 1st Vice to contact the District President. The District President communicates with the Department President; and Department communicates with National. Units should not go directly to National. Units need to go through District Chairmen for answers to questions on programs (Department Chairmen if your district doesn't have that particular program chairman.)

4: Basic Parliamentary - to make a motion: the member should rise, address the chair, and wait to be recognized, make the motion (I move that). Once the motion is seconded the chair states the motion, calls for discussion, takes the vote, and then states the result (carried or lost).

5: Basic Protocol - starting meetings promptly is valuable for many reasons; it prevents the fatigue of waiting and causing confusion by keeping to a schedule.

Most workshops take about 5 hours and are held on Saturdays or Sundays. We include a Field Service Certification Class during lunch.
